Information signs are a useful way to ensure that service users, employees and visitors to your premises are made aware of any issues that may affect them during their visit, as well as helping to clarify what is expected of them while they remain on your premises or within your employ.

What information signs do I need?

Some information signage is mandatory and covered by Health and Safety Regulations, you should familiarise yourself with requirements for fire exit signage, first aid signage and hazard signage before installation.

Other information signage will be dictated by the needs and practice of your business and your own discretion. Every working environment can benefit from some form of information sign, whether it is for something very specific, as is the case with our PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) signs, or simple and effective instructions to help generate behaviours that you wish to foster in the workplace with our general information signs.

Where should information signs be placed?

Signage should be easily visible to all who enter the area, and you may wish to consider placing signs at eye level for both walking and wheelchair using workers and members of the public. Consider the impact you wish the sign to have and the location where the maximum amount of people will see it at any given time.

What do the colours of information signs mean?

Safety signs are required to use standardised colour coding – red, yellow amber, blue or green – according to the specific risk at hand. Information road signs, for example, will stand apart from mandatory signs health and safety. Colour coding regulations are laid out in the HSE’s Safety Signs and Signals guidelines, which are free to download. How big should information signs be?

To select the appropriate sizes, you will need to know exactly where and how your signs are to be used. Information signs on the road, for example, will be larger than mandatory signs in the workplace, to ensure good visibility for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. What kind of finishings are best for information safety signs?

Your choice of finishing will depend once again on where and how your signs are going to be used.

If you plan to use signage outdoors, for example, information road signs, you will need to select a finishing such as Durasign, which will protect against everyday stresses such as wind, rain and knocks. A vandal-resistant finish is also available. Reflective laminate is particularly important for use on roads, construction sites or other outdoor areas that may be used after dark. Nite-Glo or Xtra-Glo are recommended for identifying emergency exits and escape routes in the event of a power outage.
