Good to know

The standard EN511:2006 is the standard working gloves have to meet if these are to be used as hand protection against the cold. The pictogram for this standard is a figure of a snow crystal enclosed in a shield with three ratings underneath. Like other European safety standard pictograms, these numbers are not positioned randomly. Rather, these numbers follow a specific order (i.e., values a, b, and c from left to right) each corresponding to a particular cold hazard the rated glove should protect against:
a. Convective cold – This type of cold is a result of convection, or the conduction of cold through the atmosphere or surrounding environment. There are 4 performance levels (0-4).
b. Contact cold – This type of cold is the result of contact with a cold surface. There are also 4 performance levels (0-4).
c. Water permeability – This is the ability of the glove to resist water. There are only 2 performance levels (0 and 1).

Please remember, a work glove rated to EN511 does not necessarily need to provide protection for all three types of hazards, so be sure to review the glove’s rating to see if this will provide you with the protection you need.
