The General Data Protection Regulation Guide

The way you must treat personal data has now changed through the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which was implemented on 25th May 2018.

What is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation is legislation which ensures transparency regarding how, why and when you store personal information and allows the public to raise any concerns regarding this. The use of CCTV cameras also comes under this law, which means your current CCTV signage may need updating.

What is GDPR compliance?

To remain compliant, GDPR requires businesses to protect the personal data and privacy of EU residents. Non-compliance could result in companies incurring costly penalties.

What information does my sign need to display?

Avoid GDPR fines by installing signage which stipulates:

  • the purpose for using CCTV cameras on your premises
  • the name of the operator
  • contact details of the operator for any queries

Where do I position my signage?

CCTV signs must be clearly visible and should also:

  • be placed at entrances and at regular intervals around your site
  • be sized appropriately for the intended audience
  • cover public areas such as footpaths, if they are within your security camera range

How do I manage CCTV recordings?

CCTV footage can only be retained for as long as is necessary. The length of time recordings can be kept is determined by the purpose for which the data is to be used, based on applicable laws and regulations. You should check with a lawyer to determine the appropriate length of time to retain your CCTV recordings. Upon expiration of the applicable retention period, CCTV footage should be securely and safely destroyed to prevent the disclosure of personal data.

Further information regarding the General Data Protection Regulation can be found on the Information Commissioner’s Office website.

Please note that the guidance we have provided is not legal advice and you should seek professional advice from GDPR lawyers in order to ensure your CCTV camera practices are fully compliant with all applicable laws.

We offer a broad range of compliant CCTV signage which allows you to remain up to date with GDPR legislation.
