Choosing Emergency & Rescue Stretchers

What is an emergency rescue stretcher?

Emergency rescue stretchers enable you to reduce the risk of additional injury to patients when you transport them after a medical accident or other emergencies.

For example, rescue stretchers can be used in operations that may need to be conducted in challenging conditions, such as where there has been damage to a building or outdoors on rugged terrain. Such a scenario can make lifting and evacuation of injured persons troublesome. Lightweight rescue stretchers and other equipment that can bear heavy loads are vital to facilitate moving people as quickly and efficiently as possible.

What are the types of stretchers?

Scoop Stretcher
Spinal Immobilisation Board
Patient Transfer Sheet

We offer a range of patient stretchers, including an Emergency Folding Stretcher. Made with a durable aluminium frame and easy-to-clean PVC material, this equipment is tough yet compact and supplied with a handy storage bag.

Similarly our ambulance Scoop Emergency Stretcher can be extended from 1200mm to 1900mm. It also features an open central panel to allow x-rays to be taken of the spine without the need for lifting the patient off the stretcher.

Our spinal immobilisation board protects patients with suspected back injuries, minimising the risk of further damage in transit. This rigid board is compatible with a range of straps and similar systems to secure patients, and the slim-profile allows for straightforward storage.

If patients need to be moved from your premises onto an ambulance or hospital bed, the patient transfer sheet can make this process smoother and safer, with less pressure on all involved.

Every item in this collection is designed with hygiene in mind and is easy to keep clean. Where appropriate, fire-retardant materials are used for optimal safety.

What is the difference between a rescue stretcher and a gurney?

These terms are often used interchangeably, however they do refer to different medical aid items. Both a stretcher and a gurney are used for lifting and transporting individuals who are sick or injured.

A gurney is used to transport any patient that must be kept in a horizontal position, similar to a stretcher, but a gurney can be manoeuvred by a single handler and looks more like a bed.

A rescue stretcher is considered to be a far more portable piece of equipment, making it ideal for scenarios such as transporting injured players from the pitch at sporting events; or transporting patients to safety during search and rescue operations. Adjustable stretchers and folding stretchers are vital for optimising patient comfort and ease during an emergency; therefore, these emergency stretchers need to be maintained and inspected often.

A gurney is often found in hospital wards, or being used by paramedics in an ambulance. Unlike a rescue stretcher, a gurney is fitted with wheels to enable convenient and efficient patient transport.

For which types of patients are rescue stretchers utilised?

Using a rescue stretcher or other specialist equipment for lifting or moving an injured person can help to reduce pressure on the back, neck, or other body parts from further injury. You must have emergency stretchers; foldable stretchers, adjustable stretchers, available to support people who are injured and need medical aid or evacuation, as well as those who cannot leave a building in an emergency without help due to disabilities, as required under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

Remember, it should be easy for individuals to locate your emergency aid apparatus. A great way to do this is with clear signs marking the location of such items.

“Where –
  • a provision, criterion or practice applied by or on behalf of an employer, or
  • any physical feature of premises occupied by the employer,
places the disabled person concerned at a substantial disadvantage in comparison with persons who are not disabled, it is the duty of the employer to take such steps as it is reasonable, in all the circumstances of the case, for him to have to take in order to prevent the provision, criterion or practice, or feature, having that effect.”

Emergency stretchers or rescue stretchers with other evacuation equipment are essential to a company’s safety plans to keep injured and disabled staff, customers and visitors safe in the event of an emergency on the premises. When there is a suspected back, neck or leg injury, a rescue stretcher will ensure minimal movement of the casualty’s body during transportation.

Evacuation Accessories

Our range of foldable stretcher, for additional protection, we offer a full range of accessories, such as our head immobiliser that can be used when moving patients. The head immobiliser we supply is compatible with support collars and boards and allows access to the patient’s ear canal so monitoring can continue. This is particularly useful in any situation where head/neck restraint is critical, even if the patient is upright in a chair, before being transferred to a spinal board or similar.

Rescue Stretcher Labels and Signs

When an incident occurs, it is essential that safety products, such as emergency stretchers, foldable stretchers and adjustable stretchers, with other emergency equipment, such as chairs, can be accessed immediately. Stretcher First Aid Signs and Labels make it easy for staff and other people on the premises to locate the stretcher and other emergency products quickly. Ensure your emergency stretcher signs are displayed prominently to avoid unnecessary delays in evacuating people and transporting patients.
